Emulsion Block

Oilfield emulsions are stable mixtures of immiscible components. They form when water mixes with produced crude. When these emulsions are stabilized by naturally occurring emulsifiers and sediments, production can be impeded.

There are two conditions that can cause the formation of emulsions. When fluid filtrates or injected fluids and reservoir fluids, such as oil or brine, mix. Or when the pH of the producing fluid changes, such as after an acidizing treatment (potentially changing the pH from 6 or 7 to less than 4).

These viscous, sticky emulsions can form on the completion string, in the annulus or on the wellbore wall causing significant drops in production. Breaking emulsions can be a complex task because no two are alike. In fact, even emulsions from a single well may vary over time which complicates the challenge to disperse them.

The best way to break down emulsions is with a structured process where the data from the treated well is continually monitored and analyzed. Then the treatment program is adjusted to meet the ever changing conditions observed in the wells.

Other common coincidental skin damage mechanisms are wettability, asphaltene, inorganic scale and paraffin.
